HDTV in sharper focus
Have you seen that a rather bizarre advert for SKY Sports on HDTV? It is quite ridiculous. Unless you are a Sky aficionado or an occasionall viewer of Sky Sports News on freeview you might have missed this little gem – so I will explain.
It shows a memorable Manchester United goal against Arsenal last year in which all the Manchester United players have been blanked out as the ball pings with remarkable speed from an Arsenal corner to the back of the Arsenal net, with all the Arsenal players apparently chasing shadows. (Which if memory serves me correctly – they were on that particular evening).
Now here’s the thing…. I don’t have HDTV but I remember seeing that particular goal in all its glory – and didn’t miss any of the United players involved. Even if Manchester United might be missing one or two of them now.
So in effect this advert is a blatant misrepresentation. Getting HDTV and Sky is not exactly necessary to see a football team. Although if you really must see the preening, pouting Ronaldo in action week in, week out, I suppose you might need Spanish football on Sky.
In fact you really have to be a techy of the highest order to get too excited about HDTV – because the picture quality of television has been plenty good enough for many years. Now granted if you needing the best possible picture definition for a spot of brain surgery say, then HDTV might be a bonus. But to update you on the latest innovation from Pot Noodle, or a nice close up of footballer’s phlegm? I think not.
But back to the misleading advert. Maybe it is time to starting taking part in technology forums and see what else I am missing. After all I’d hate to miss out on something else I don’t want and don’t need.
