England are Actually Looking Good
I suggest that I was not the only one pinching myself in amazement last night as England walked into the World Cup finals. And this was actually the second time we have thrashed out old nemesis Croatia.
As the players are largely the ones who looked so clueless under Sven Urine Eriksson and the wally with the brolly, you have to conclude that Fabio Capello must actually know what he is doing.
I have to say this is a bit of a surprise. I kind of thought that a manager with no experience of international football, no experience of English football and no command of the English language was not an idea appointment for the England national football team.
Maybe I was wrong. My original thought was that the ideal appointment would have been a circus lion tamer. Given that some of our national heroes sometimes seem to be snarling feral beasts who are not to be trusted, this seemed an excellent idea.
My second thought was maybe a regimental sergeant major from one of the Army’s elite regiment. He would broke no nonsense which would seem to be half the job. But would our footballer’s have any sense of discipline?
My third thought is the best of all. Make the job of England manager part-time and give it to somebody with some English players in his team.
Let’s face it, being England manager must be a remarkably easy job as well as a remarkably well-paid one. I suspect that even I could lead England to triumph over the likes of Andorra (a ski resort) and Kazakhstan ( the land of Borat). World Cup qualifiers like these would not demand that a pub team break into sweat.
So I am sure I could mutter ‘there are no easy games in world football Brian’, whilst exhorting the lads to try and pass to somebody in the same coloured shirt as them.
But let’s not get too cynical. England have had 3 competitive games in their world cup odyssey of 8 matches – and they have won all 3. The two against Croatia handsomely. And as Croatia are the only decent side in our group, you have to hope that they are better than they looked – and England raised their game.
